Side Table

Overview

This side table began with a piece of mahogany I found by chance under a drafting table and held onto for years, knowing I wanted to use it someday. When a furniture competition came around, it became the perfect opportunity to finally build with it. The design centers on highlighting the wood’s natural grain and distinctive knot. Special attention was given to the connection between the mahogany top and steel base; rather than simply fastening the two together, I designed and machined custom steel connections on the lathe and mill, allowing the base to sit quietly beneath the wood so the top appears to float and remains the focal point of the piece.

Sketches

Exploratory sketches studying variations in steel base form and the design of custom machined connections between the wood top and steel structure.

3D Render

The side table was modeled in Rhino to resolve dimensions, refine connection details, and verify fit and alignment prior to fabrication.

Final Product

The side table was carefully fabricated with close attention to accuracy and fit. The steel components were precisely machined to ensure the base aligned cleanly and the connections fit snugly within the mahogany top.
